The Low Country encompasses the coastal areas of South Carolina and Georgia. There are many state and federal wildlife management or refuge areas throughout the Low Country. The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge is home to the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive where alligators thrive and breed each spring. Large Great Blue Heron actively hunt here. Further south, also part of the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge, is the Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge where giant Wood Stork nest each spring. North, across the state border, South Carolina manages the Donnelley Wildlife area which boasts woods mingled with historic rice fields, all home to various creatures of land, sea and air.
